Look, when you hear 'James Bond stealth game made by IO Interactive,' your brain immediately goes to 'Hitman but with a tuxedo and a martini.' The devs at IO want you to pump the brakes on that comparison - and according to Kotaku, they've been doing some explaining.

The studio behind the Hitman World of Assassination trilogy is drawing a clear line between Agent 47's sandbox murder playgrounds and what 007 First Light is cooking. Rather than the wide-open, puzzle-box assassination missions Hitman fans know and love, First Light is positioned as a more narrative-driven origin story - think less 'how many ways can I drown a target in a toilet' and more 'cinematic spy thriller with actual feelings.'

So what actually makes it different?

According to the devs (as reported by Kotaku), the game leans into Bond's character arc and story progression in ways that Hitman's episodic, replayable mission structure never really had to. You're not a blank-slate assassin this time - you're James Bond, and the game apparently wants you to feel that weight. It's less of a 'live out your power fantasy' simulator and more of an authored experience.

The comparison to Hitman is basically unavoidable given IO's pedigree, but the studio seems aware they need to justify the distinction. Whether they actually pull it off is a whole other boss fight we haven't unlocked yet.

And about Lenny Kravitz...

In what is genuinely the most devastating plot twist in gaming news this week, Lenny Kravitz - who was announced as part of the cast - is apparently NOT the main villain. Previous speculation had many of us ready to face off against the actual rockstar in a final showdown, possibly while 'Are You Gonna Go My Way' played ironically in the background. Alas, that particular fever dream is not the game we're getting.

What role Kravitz actually plays remains to be seen, but 'not the final boss' is doing a lot of heavy lifting in the disappointment department right now.

007 First Light doesn't have a confirmed release date yet, so we're still in the 'wait and see' loading screen for now. But if IO can translate their assassination sandbox expertise into a tighter, story-first spy thriller, this could be an easy 'S rank' for Bond's gaming comeback.
