Alright adventurers, strap in - Amazon Gaming is apparently back on its hobbit grind. According to Polygon, Amazon Gaming GM Jeff Gattis has confirmed that the company is actively prototyping video game concepts set in the Lord of the Rings universe. Yes, the same Amazon that had to respawn after their big MMO project got unceremoniously deleted from existence.
So what exactly is Amazon building?
Details are thinner than Frodo's biceps right now. Gattis gave an executive-level "we're working on stuff" update without dropping any concrete info on genre, platforms, or release windows. What we do know is that multiple ideas are being prototyped, which in game dev language could mean anything from "we have a whiteboard with doodles" to "we have three playable builds ready."

The context here is important - Amazon previously had an MMO in development set in Tolkien's world, which ended up getting cancelled. That project reportedly spent years in development limbo before getting the final boss execution, making this new prototyping phase feel like a character select screen reset after a brutal game over.
Amazon Gaming's track record: a mixed bag of loot
Let's be real with each other here. Amazon's gaming division has had a rocky playthrough. New World launched with a massive player count and then haemorrhaged its community faster than a Level 1 character walking into a max-level zone. Lost Ark had a strong debut as a publishing deal but came with its own baggage. The pressure is on for Amazon to actually deliver a W in the gaming space.

On the flip side, Lord of the Rings is arguably one of the most powerful IP cards you can pull from the deck. A well-crafted Middle-earth game could be absolutely legendary - we're talking potential Game of the Year conversation territory. The lore is deep, the world is rich, and fans are absolutely starving for a quality LOTR experience after years of middling licensed titles.
The real question: what KIND of game?
This is where the speculation minigame begins. Are we getting an open-world RPG? A strategy title? Another MMO attempt? A mobile gacha where you pull for Legolas? The prototyping phase suggests Amazon is still figuring out the answer themselves, which is both reassuring (they're not rushing) and mildly terrifying (they have no idea what they're doing yet).
We'll be watching this quest log entry very closely. One does not simply walk into Middle-earth game development - but hopefully Amazon has finally levelled up enough to pull it off.
