Bloodborne is officially making its return - not as the remaster or sequel fans have been begging for, but as a full R-rated animated film. According to Video Games Chronicle, the beloved FromSoftware action RPG is being adapted into an animated movie, and the project comes with a surprising name attached: Seán "Jacksepticeye" McLoughlin is on board as a producer.
The R rating signals that the project isn't pulling any punches when it comes to capturing Bloodborne's notoriously bleak, grotesque tone. The source material is soaked in Lovecraftian horror, body horror, and cosmic dread - so a sanitized adaptation would have been a serious misfire. An adult-targeted animated format feels like a legitimate creative choice for translating the game's aesthetic to screen.
An unexpected but interesting producing credit
Jacksepticeye's involvement as a producer will raise some eyebrows, though the Irish creator has been vocal about his love for the game over the years. His pivot into film production isn't entirely new territory - McLoughlin has been expanding beyond YouTube for some time - but attaching himself to one of gaming's most revered cult titles is a bold move that puts real expectations on the project.
Bloodborne originally launched on PS4 in 2015 and quickly cemented itself as one of the generation's defining games. Developed by FromSoftware in collaboration with Sony, it has never received a PC port or remaster despite years of fan demand, making this animated adaptation the first major return to the IP in nearly a decade.
What this means for the IP
Sony still holds the publishing rights to Bloodborne, so this production signals that the company is at least willing to explore the franchise in new formats. Whether that translates into renewed interest in a game remaster or sequel remains to be seen, but any Bloodborne activity is going to put the IP back into the cultural conversation in a meaningful way.
Animation as a medium has proven it can handle dark, complex game adaptations - Castlevania on Netflix being the obvious reference point. If the Bloodborne movie commits to the source material's oppressive atmosphere and intricate lore around Yharnam and the Great Ones, there's a genuinely compelling film lurking in this announcement. Details on the studio behind the animation, release window, and distribution platform have not yet been confirmed.
