Put down your chaos codex and pay attention, because Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is about to make your trigger finger very happy. According to a hands-on preview over at DualShockers, the sequel is going bigger by giving players not one, but TWO playable characters to choose from - each packing their own unique loadouts and abilities.

That's right, the first game's glorious boomer-shooter chaos-murdering formula is getting a serious upgrade. Rather than being locked into a single walking fortress of bolter fire and righteous fury, you'll now pick your preferred flavor of Space Marine before diving headfirst into the pixel-gore buffet.

Two characters, one goal: purge everything

The two characters come with distinct weapons and abilities, meaning this isn't just a palette swap situation. This is a genuine "different playstyle" kind of deal - the kind of choice that will absolutely split friend groups and spark heated Discord debates about which pick is objectively the superior servant of the Emperor.

For the uninitiated, the original Boltgun was basically a love letter to old-school shooters like Doom and Quake, wrapped in a gorgeous retro pixel aesthetic and drenched in 40K lore. It was fast, loud, and deeply satisfying in the way that only blasting heretics into chunky red mist can be. The sequel appears to be building on that foundation rather than reinventing it - which, honestly, is the correct call. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If it IS broke, hit it with a chainsword until it works again.

More characters could mean more replayability

Adding a second playable character is a smart move for replay value. Once you've shredded through the campaign as one holy warrior, you've got a built-in reason to boot it back up and run it again with a completely different feel. That's the kind of design decision that turns a good game into a "wait, it's 3am already?" game.

DualShockers' preview suggests the hands-on experience left a strong impression, and if the first Boltgun is anything to go by, Fatshark's pixel-powered sequel has a very solid foundation to build on. The Emperor protects - and apparently he's been generous enough to provide backup this time.
