Capcom made good on an announcement that many dismissed as an April Fool's joke: the original Resident Evil trilogy is now live on Steam. Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis have all landed on Valve's platform, with Breath of Fire IV along for the ride as a surprise bonus.
According to Game Informer, each title has received quality-of-life enhancements to ensure compatibility with modern operating systems and current controllers. Beyond those updates, it sounds like Capcom is keeping the classic experience largely intact - which is exactly what preservation-minded fans want to hear.
A birthday gift three decades in the making
The releases are part of Capcom's ongoing celebration of Resident Evil's 30th anniversary in 2026. Getting the original trilogy onto a modern storefront is a meaningful move - these games have been notoriously difficult to track down legally for years, and PC availability has been spotty at best.
The original 1996 Resident Evil practically invented the survival horror genre as we know it, while RE2 is widely regarded as one of the greatest games ever made. RE3: Nemesis introduced one of gaming's most iconic antagonists and pushed the series' cinematic action forward. Having all three in one accessible place is a genuine win for both newcomers and returning players.
Breath of Fire IV rounds out the drop
Capcom throwing in Breath of Fire IV is a welcome curveball. The beloved 2000 RPG has had limited availability on modern platforms, so its Steam debut alongside the RE trilogy gives classic Capcom fans even more reason to check out this drop. It's a reminder that Capcom's back catalog runs deep beyond just its flagship horror franchise.
If you've only experienced the acclaimed remakes of RE2 and RE3, this is a solid opportunity to go back and see where the series started - tank controls and all. The originals hit differently, and with controller support sorted out, the barrier to entry just got a lot lower.
