Playground Games has confirmed that Fable is still on track for an autumn 2026 release, putting to rest a wave of weekend speculation that the long-awaited RPG reboot might quietly sidestep a collision with Grand Theft Auto 6. The clarification comes after rumours circulated suggesting the studio was internally nervous about going head-to-head with Rockstar's juggernaut, according to Eurogamer.

The rumours painted a picture of a developer caught in a tough spot - launch against one of the most anticipated games in history, or push to 2027 and risk further eroding player confidence in a title that has already been in development for years. It's the kind of no-win scenario that would keep any studio exec up at night.

GTA 6 shadow looms large

The concern isn't without merit. GTA 6 is shaping up to be a cultural event on the scale of GTA 5's 2013 launch, and the games industry has a well-documented habit of clearing the runway when Rockstar comes in for a landing. Smaller and mid-tier releases routinely shift release windows to avoid being buried under the hype.

Fable, however, is not a small release. This is Microsoft and Xbox Game Studios' flagship RPG revival, a reboot of a beloved franchise that hasn't seen a mainline entry since Fable: The Journey in 2012. Playground Games, best known for the Forza Horizon series, has been building this one for a while, and the pressure to deliver something worthy of the name is significant.

Autumn window still holds

Despite the chatter, Playground Games appears to be holding the line on its release window. Whether that confidence reflects genuine readiness or a strategic decision to stand firm regardless, the studio isn't blinking - at least publicly.

It's worth noting that both games landing in the same general window doesn't necessarily spell disaster for Fable. GTA 6 is launching on consoles first, and Fable is an Xbox and PC title. The audiences overlap, sure, but they're not identical platforms competing for the exact same player at the exact same moment.

For Xbox, getting Fable out this year matters beyond just sales numbers. It's a statement of intent for the platform's first-party lineup, which has taken hits in the court of public opinion over recent years. A delay into 2027, rumour or not, would have been a rough headline to absorb.

We'll be keeping a close eye on any official release date announcement from Playground Games in the coming weeks.
