After what feels like approximately 47 years of waiting, Xbox Game Studios and Playground Games have finally dropped a release date for the long-awaited Fable reboot, according to Niche Gamer. The game is locked in for February 23rd, 2027 - which, yes, is still over a year away, but at least we have a real honest-to-goodness date to countdown to.

The reboot will launch across Windows PC (via both Steam and the Microsoft Store), Xbox Series X|S, and - plot twist - PS5. That's right, Sony players who have been watching from the sidelines get to join the party too. Playground Games, the studio behind the Forza Horizon series, is clearly playing on multiple servers this time around.

So what exactly is this game?

For the uninitiated, Fable is Playground's full reboot of the beloved action-RPG franchise that once let you become a hero, a villain, or a portly flatulent goblin - your call. The new entry promises an immersive open-world action-RPG experience where you build the hero you want to be, carrying on the spirit of player choice that made the originals legendary.

A new trailer also dropped alongside the announcement, giving players their freshest look yet at the world and gameplay. If you were the kind of gamer who obsessively replayed the original Fable titles on Xbox trying every possible moral alignment, this is basically your character select screen for adulthood.

The long respawn timer is almost over

The Fable reboot was first announced back in 2020, meaning by launch day it will have spent a solid seven years in development - that's basically a full Dark Souls playthrough in real time. The PS5 inclusion is particularly noteworthy given Xbox's historically platform-exclusive tendencies, suggesting Microsoft is leaning hard into a multi-platform strategy to maximize their player count.

February 2027 might feel like it's in another dimension right now, but with a concrete date on the board, the hype bar is officially loading. Whether Playground can recapture the magic of Peter Molyneux's original RPG trilogy remains the ultimate boss fight - but for now, we finally have a release date, and that alone deserves a standing ovation.
