Gear up, Warriors of Light, because Final Fantasy XIV is officially making its way to the Nintendo Switch 2. According to Siliconera, Square Enix has confirmed that the beloved MMO is heading to Nintendo's shiny new hardware - so yes, you will soon be able to get destroyed by Extreme trials while riding the bus.
Before you ask: no, this isn't some watered-down port situation where you're playing on lowest settings and calling it a day. This is FFXIV on the go, baby. Do note, however, that the Switch 2 version will come with a separate subscription, so prepare to open your wallet for yet another monthly fee - because apparently one subscription per MMO wasn't spicy enough already.
PS4 players: you haven't been yeeted out of the party yet
In a move that should have PS4 players breathing a massive sigh of relief, Square Enix also confirmed that PlayStation 4 support for FFXIV will continue through patch 8.3, per Siliconera. That's a decent runway for last-gen console holders who either can't or won't make the jump to PS5 just yet.
Given that FFXIV is currently sitting in its 7.x patch cycle, support through 8.3 means PS4 players are looking at a solid chunk of content still ahead of them. Think of it as Square Enix handing out a Raise spell to a platform that many had already written off as a fallen party member.
What does this mean for the FFXIV endgame meta?
The Switch 2 announcement is a big deal in terms of player reach - FFXIV has always thrived on its massive, welcoming community, and putting it on a portable platform could bring a whole new wave of sprouts into Eorzea. More players means more people in the Party Finder, which means slightly fewer naked lalafells running around in starting zones. Probably.
For now, both announcements signal that Square Enix is playing the long game with FFXIV - expanding its platform footprint while keeping legacy players in the fold as long as reasonably possible. Not exactly a world-first raid clear, but definitely a solid progression strat.
