Uh oh. Looks like someone forgot to send David Jaffe the memo that God of War was allowed to change. The original creator of the franchise went on a livestream during Sony's State of Play and, let's just say, he was not exactly handing out participation trophies for the God of War Laufey reveal.
According to Game Rant, Jaffe made his feelings crystal clear during the broadcast, essentially calling out the new entry for straying too far from what he considers the soul of the series. For a guy who literally built Kratos from the ground up, you can understand why watching the franchise evolve in a direction he doesn't vibe with might sting a little.

Respect the OG, but also... franchises level up
Here's the thing though - this is a tale as old as gaming itself. Creator makes iconic thing, new team takes iconic thing in a bold new direction, original creator logs onto Twitch with a face like they just got hit by a Leviathan Axe. It's practically a genre at this point.

God of War under Cory Barlog essentially respawned the entire franchise back in 2018, ditching the hack-and-slash button-mashing roots for a slower, more emotional, Norse mythology-soaked adventure. That pivot was controversial at the time too, and it ended up being one of the most acclaimed games of its generation. Now it sounds like Laufey is pushing the formula even further, and Jaffe is not here for it.

So what exactly is God of War Laufey?
Details on God of War Laufey are still rolling in following the State of Play reveal, but the game appears to be continuing the Norse saga in ways that are clearly raising eyebrows both inside and outside the dev community. When the guy who created the IP is publicly saying "this is not God of War," that's either a massive red flag or the best free marketing Sony never had to pay for - possibly both.
Whether Jaffe's critique lands as a genuine cautionary warning or just comes across as classic "old head yells at cloud" energy is honestly up to the player community to decide. Sony Santa Monica has a pretty stacked track record with this rebooted era of the franchise, so maybe let them cook before everyone unequips their patience.
Either way, one thing is certain - the hype meter and the drama meter just both got a significant XP boost ahead of this release. Per Game Rant, the discourse is already in full swing, and we are absolutely here for it.
