Just when you thought Doki Doki Literature Club couldn't traumatize you any further, Google went ahead and pulled the entire game from its Play Store. According to GamesIndustry.biz, the beloved (and deeply unsettling) visual novel has been removed following alleged violations of Google's terms of service.
For the uninitiated, Doki Doki Literature Club is not your average anime club simulator. Developed by Team Salvato, it's a psychological horror visual novel wrapped in a deceptively cute package - the kind of game that makes you question your life choices approximately 90 minutes in. It has been a cult classic since its 2017 launch, so its disappearance from Android's storefront is a pretty big deal.

So what exactly did DDLC do wrong?
Google hasn't exactly been forthcoming with the specifics, which is very on-brand for a company the size of a small moon. The removal cites a terms of service violation, but no detailed explanation has been given publicly, leaving fans to speedrun conspiracy theories in the comments sections across the internet.

This is particularly spicy because DDLC has always carried content warnings for its mature psychological themes - it literally opens with a disclaimer that includes references to depression and disturbing content. The game isn't hiding what it is. If anything, it's one of the most upfront games in the genre about its dark subject matter.

The plot armor has officially run out
The irony here is absolutely chef's kiss. A game famously about breaking the fourth wall and subverting expectations has itself been deleted from existence on one of the world's biggest platforms. Monika would probably find a way to blame herself.
Android players who had already downloaded the game should still be able to access it, but new downloads are currently off the table. PC players can still grab the game for free on Steam, so the experience isn't gone entirely - just significantly less accessible for mobile users who were hoping to have an existential crisis on their commute.
Team Salvato has not yet issued a public statement on the matter, and it remains to be seen whether this is a permanent ban or something that can be resolved with a policy update. Either way, Google's Play Store has officially done something scarier than anything in the actual game - and that is saying a lot.
