Plot twist nobody asked for but everybody needed: Dr. Robotnik is NOT dead. According to Kotaku, the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 - shown at CinemaCon - confirms that Jim Carrey's beloved unhinged villain is returning, defying whatever fate the last movie had in store for him.
If you thought the Sonic movie franchise was going to bench its most powerful NPC, think again. Carrey's Robotnik has been the secret final boss of this whole franchise, and apparently the devs - sorry, filmmakers - decided a world without his mustache-twirling chaos is simply not a world worth shipping.

Respawn confirmed
Details on HOW Robotnik survived are still locked behind a day-one patch, but the trailer apparently makes it clear enough that he's back in action. Kotaku reports the footage was shown exclusively at CinemaCon, so the rest of us are out here running on secondhand descriptions like it's 2005 and we're reading GameFAQs spoilers.

Look, this is the guy who made the entire first movie worth watching. Jim Carrey went so hard as Eggman that he reportedly considered retiring from acting afterward - which means he basically pulled off a legendary speedrun and wanted to close the game on a high note. The fact that he's back suggests someone at the studio wrote him a check with a lot of zeros.

What does this mean for the lore?
The Sonic cinematic universe is clearly not afraid to hit the "continue" button on its most chaotic character. With Knuckles already getting his own series and Tails firmly in the squad, bringing Robotnik back keeps the main antagonist slot filled by someone who actually chews scenery at a competitive, almost esports-level pace.
Whether this is a full comeback or a glorified cameo remains to be seen - but either way, the hype bar just got raised. Sonic 4 is shaping up to be the kind of sequel that actually remembered what made the original hit different.
No release date has been confirmed yet, but keep your chaos emeralds ready. This one's incoming.
