Press F to pay respects, everyone. According to Game Developer, Ludum Dare - one of the longest-running and most beloved game jams in the industry - has officially announced it will close its doors in October 2028. That's right, the whole thing is getting a definitive end screen.

For the uninitiated, Ludum Dare is basically the Dark Souls of game jams: brutal, unforgiving, yet somehow responsible for some of the most creative and iconic titles to ever come out of indie development. We're talking about Celeste and Inscryption, two absolute bangers that went from jam prototypes to full-blown critical darlings sitting comfortably in players' all-time favorites lists.

A legendary save file coming to an end

Ludum Dare has been the spawning ground for countless developers who cut their teeth racing against a clock to build something - anything - playable over a single weekend. It's essentially a permadeath speedrun for game design, and apparently, the whole server is about to get wiped come 2028.

The announcement gives the community roughly four more years to participate, which is enough time for a few more runs before the credits roll. Whether that means we'll see one final wave of hidden gem prototypes that eventually evolve into the next indie masterpiece is anyone's guess - but the pressure is definitely on.

Why does this hit different?

Game jams like Ludum Dare are essentially the tutorial zones of the industry - the places where developers grind their first XP, fail spectacularly, and occasionally roll a critical hit that changes their lives. Losing one of the most established events of its kind feels like Blizzard removing the original Diablo servers. It's the end of an era, and no patch is going to fix that.

If you've ever thought about entering a game jam but kept telling yourself you'd do it "next time," consider this your side quest notification. You've got four years left on the clock - start farming those skills now before this one despawns for good.
