Listen up, ballers - it looks like the era of gravity-defying, rim-rattling arcade basketball might finally be making its comeback. NBA The Run, developed and published by Play by Play Studios, is shaping up to be the spiritual successor to the legendary NBA Street series that many of us grew up pouring quarters of our youth into.
According to a hands-on preview from Game Informer, the game is drawing heavy inspiration from the golden age of arcade hoops - think NBA Jam, NBA Hangtime, and most notably NBA Street Vol. 2. That means over-the-top dunks, no-foul-calls chaos, and the kind of no-rules playground energy that made those classics absolute must-plays back in the day.

So what's the deal with NBA The Run?
The game is currently targeting a 2026 release window across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC - so we're still a ways out from tipping off. It carries an Everyone rating, which means the whole squad can get in on the action without your mom taking the controller away.

Game Informer's preview describes the game as a "strong prospect," which in basketball terms means this rookie is showing serious potential but still has some development time ahead. The DNA is clearly there though - if Play by Play Studios can successfully capture what made NBA Street Vol. 2 a certified classic while adding some modern flair, we might be looking at a serious contender for arcade sports game of the generation.

Why should you care?
Because the arcade sports genre has been stuck in respawn limbo for way too long. While simulation basketball sims have dominated the courts for years, the chaotic, skill-expression-heavy style of old-school arcade basketball has basically been sitting on the bench collecting dust. NBA The Run looks to finally sub in and change that meta.
We're still in early days - 2026 is basically a whole expansion pack away - but the early buzz is promising enough to keep this one on your radar. Consider it wishlisted, bookmarked, and mentally filed under "please don't disappoint us."
