Nintendo has just dropped a surprise patch nobody asked for: global price increases for the Switch 2, with Nintendo Switch Online in Japan also taking a hit to the savings bar. According to Nintendo Life, the hardware price revisions go live in Japan as early as 25th May 2026, with western markets getting the bad news delivered a bit later on 1st September 2026.
Nintendo is blaming the usual final-area excuses - "changes in market conditions" and the "global business outlook" - which is basically corpo-speak for "we have our reasons and you will pay them." It's the kind of vague reasoning that makes you feel like you just skipped a cutscene and have no idea why the villain is winning.
For Japanese players, the pain is double-sided: not only does the hardware cost more, but Nintendo Switch Online is also getting pricier in the region. Western subscribers can breathe for now, but don't get too comfortable - that feels like a DLC announcement that's just waiting for its reveal trailer.
Let's be real: the Switch 2 was already not exactly a bargain bin pick-up. Slapping an extra price tag on top is like charging for fast travel in a game that already cost you 80 euros. Players who were sitting on the fence about whether to grab the console now have a very clear timer ticking above their heads.
The silver lining - if you can call it that - is that western markets have until September to grab the hardware at current prices. Consider this your side quest warning: the clock is ticking, the price hike is the final boss, and your only strategy is to buy before the patch drops.
