Nintendo is currently dealing with a real-life side quest nobody wanted: an extortion group called ShadowBytes has allegedly gotten its grubby hands on private employee data through a third-party platform called TinyPulse, and is now holding it hostage for a cool $2 million. According to Kotaku, the group describes itself as an 'extortion as a service' outfit, which is honestly the most dystopian premium subscription model we've ever heard of.

Nintendo has confirmed to Kotaku that it is 'aware of an issue' involving the third-party vendor, which is corporate-speak for 'yes, this is happening and we are sweating.' TinyPulse is an employee engagement platform, meaning the compromised data could include sensitive internal communications and personal employee information - exactly the kind of stuff you do NOT want falling into the hands of a group that monetizes blackmail like it's a battle pass.

ShadowBytes has reportedly threatened to leak the data publicly if Nintendo doesn't pay up by their deadline, making this less of a data breach and more of a timed event with terrible rewards for everyone involved. Think of it as a raid encounter, except the raid boss is demanding cryptocurrency and the loot table is full of someone's HR records.

This comes at a particularly awkward time for Nintendo, which is currently riding a massive wave of hype around the Nintendo Switch 2 launch. Nothing like a ransomware subplot to take the edge off those launch day celebrations. The fact that the breach reportedly originates from a third-party vendor rather than Nintendo's own systems is cold comfort - when your data ends up in the wrong hands, it doesn't really matter which door the thief came through.

As of writing, there is no confirmation that Nintendo has paid the ransom or that any data has been leaked. Given that paying ransoms is generally considered a bad speed run strategy - it just encourages more of the same behavior - hopefully Nintendo is coordinating with law enforcement instead of just handing over the gold coins. We'll be keeping an eye on this dungeon as it unfolds.
