Obsidian Entertainment has returned to The Outer Worlds after a three-year hiatus, dropping a substantial update that adds an entirely new weapon type to the sci-fi RPG. According to PC Gamer, the update also bundles in a round of bug fixes that players have been waiting on for quite some time.
The addition of a new weapon category is a meaningful expansion for a game that first launched back in 2019. Obsidian clearly hasn't completely moved on from Halcyon, and for fans who've been hoping the studio would revisit this universe, any sign of life is welcome news.

The catch nobody wanted
Here's where things get thorny. Alongside the update, Obsidian is delisting the original version of The Outer Worlds. That means the base game without the Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos DLC packs will no longer be available for purchase.

For players who were hoping to pick up the game at a lower entry price, that option is disappearing. The move essentially pushes everyone toward the Spacer's Choice Edition, which packages everything together but carries a higher price tag. It's a frustrating call, especially for budget-conscious gamers who've been waiting for a sale on the base title.

A mixed bag overall
To be fair, the new weapon type and bug fixes are genuinely good news. The Outer Worlds has always had a dedicated player base that appreciated its classic RPG sensibility and sharp writing, even if it never quite hit the highs of Obsidian's earlier work like Fallout: New Vegas. Getting any content update this far post-launch shows the studio still has some investment in the property.
The delisting decision, though, leaves a sour taste. It mirrors a broader industry trend of consolidating older SKUs into pricier complete editions - a move that benefits the publisher's bottom line more than it does the player. If you've been sitting on the fence about picking up The Outer Worlds, now might be the time to act before that cheaper entry point vanishes entirely.
With The Outer Worlds 2 confirmed to be in development at Obsidian, this update could also serve as a way to refresh interest in the franchise ahead of that sequel's eventual release.
