Samson, the sandbox action game that turned heads earlier this year with its Grand Theft Auto-style gameplay, has had a rough launch. Reviews are coming in harshly critical, dampening what had been genuine excitement building around the title.

The game first made waves back in January when its announcement trailer drew immediate comparisons to GTA, generating enough buzz that outlets - including Push Square - were half-seriously suggesting Sony should pull strings to get it onto PS5. At the time it had only been confirmed for PC, but the appetite for a console version was real.

That enthusiasm now looks premature. According to Push Square, reviews are slamming the release, which is a tough blow for a game that had carved out a decent chunk of goodwill from the gaming community before it shipped.

What went wrong?

Samson had a compelling pitch - an open-world crime sandbox at a time when the genre is starving for competition ahead of GTA 6. Players are clearly hungry for something to fill that space, which is a big part of why the announcement generated so much traction so quickly.

But a strong trailer and a marketable concept only carry a game so far. When the actual product doesn't back it up, the fall from hype to disappointment hits harder. That gap between expectation and execution is one of the most punishing dynamics in modern gaming, and Samson appears to be living it right now.

What this means for PS5 prospects

Any realistic chance of Samson making the jump to PS5 looks significantly less likely in the wake of these reviews. Publishers and platform holders pay close attention to critical reception before committing to ports, and a rough launch on PC rarely motivates that kind of investment without a major patch overhaul first.

For PlayStation owners who got caught up in the January hype, this is a case of dodging a bullet - even if it stings a little to see a promising concept stumble out of the gate. The GTA-shaped hole in the market remains very much unfilled.
