Housemarque, the studio that made you lose sleep over Returnal, is back with Saros - and according to a review from Game Informer, they've done it again. The PS5 exclusive launched April 30, 2026, and it sounds like another certified hit from PlayStation Studios' most unhinged developer (we mean that lovingly).
The game leans hard into a classic sci-fi setup: a mysterious and powerful new element called Lucenite discovered on a distant planet. Sounds like a chill mining operation, right? Wrong. The planet in question is Carcosa, and Game Informer describes it as "the stuff of inescapable but wholly engaging nightmares." So basically Housemarque looked at a perfectly normal sci-fi premise and said "what if we cranked the existential horror to eleven?"
Peak PS5 or peak PS5?
Housemarque has a reputation for taking familiar genre bones and wrapping them in something that feels genuinely alien and unsettling - see: Returnal, which traumatized an entire generation of PS5 early adopters in the best possible way. Saros appears to follow that same playbook, using Carcosa as a playground that is equal parts beautiful and deeply wrong.
Game Informer's review, titled "At The Mountains Of Magnificence" (yes, that is a Lovecraft reference, and yes, it is extremely on-brand), suggests the game earns that dramatic title. The Lucenite element and its home planet seem to be doing a lot of heavy lifting in the worldbuilding department, turning a tropey premise into something that pulls you in and refuses to let go.
So should you buy it?
If you survived Returnal and came back for more punishment - and you know who you are - Saros looks like essential gaming. Housemarque has clearly once again treated "fun" and "psychological torment" as interchangeable concepts, and honestly? Respect. The PS5 exclusive drops April 30, 2026, so start preparing your controller for the emotional damage now.
