Spiders, the French studio responsible for action RPGs like GreedFall and Steelrising, is reportedly on the verge of shutting down. According to a report from Origami, cited by Push Square, the developer is set to move into liquidation on 29th April 2026.

The closure appears to be a direct consequence of serious financial difficulties at Nacon, the French publisher that owns Spiders. Nacon has faced a turbulent stretch recently, and it seems the fallout is now hitting its internal development teams.

A studio with a distinct identity

Spiders carved out a niche over the years making mid-budget RPGs that punched above their weight in terms of ambition. GreedFall, released in 2019 and later updated for PS5, earned a solid following for its colonial-era fantasy setting and BioWare-esque companion systems. Steelrising followed in 2022, blending Soulslike combat with an alternate-history French Revolution backdrop.

Neither game was a blockbuster, but both demonstrated a team with genuine craft and a willingness to take creative swings that bigger studios often avoid. That kind of mid-tier RPG development space is already increasingly rare in today's market, making this reported closure all the more unfortunate for the genre.

Part of a broader crisis at Nacon

Spiders' situation doesn't exist in isolation. Nacon has been dealing with significant financial pressure across its business, and the ripple effects appear to be claiming one of its most recognisable studios. When publishers hit severe turbulence, it's often the development teams that bear the cost - a pattern the industry has seen play out repeatedly in recent years.

At the time of writing, neither Spiders nor Nacon has issued an official statement confirming the liquidation. Push Square attributes the original report to Origami, and details remain limited. If the timeline holds and proceedings begin on 29th April, an official confirmation could come very soon.

For the developers at Spiders, this is a tough moment. Hopefully the team's talent finds a soft landing elsewhere - the RPG space always has room for people who know how to build worlds.
