Nintendo surprised fans during an unexpected Nintendo Direct by announcing a full remake of Star Fox 64, simply titled Star Fox, coming to Switch 2 this June. The game features completely overhauled visuals and redesigned characters, making it far more than a straightforward port of the N64 classic.
According to Eurogamer, the remake adds brand new cutscenes to the experience, particularly in the form of pre-mission briefings that weren't present in the original. This suggests Nintendo is putting real effort into fleshing out the narrative around Fox McCloud's battle against Andross, giving longtime fans something fresh alongside the nostalgia hit.
The announcement is a big deal for a franchise that's been dormant for years. Star Fox 64 - originally released in 1997 and later remade for the 3DS as Star Fox 64 3D in 2011 - is widely considered the high point of the series, so a ground-up visual rebuild targeting Switch 2 hardware has serious potential to introduce Lylat Wars to a whole new generation of players.
The timing also feels deliberate. Nintendo appears to be leaning into the Star Fox IP more broadly right now, which makes a polished, modernized version of the franchise's best entry a smart move for building momentum around the character.
