Alright survivors, drop your rucksacks and listen up - State of Decay 3 has finally broken cover with an actual release window. According to Niche Gamer, Xbox Game Studios and developer Undead Labs have confirmed the long-awaited zombie survival sequel is targeting a 2027 launch on Windows PC and Xbox Series X. That's still a good while away, but hey, at least we have a year now instead of just vibes.
The real respawn surprise here is the PS5 port. That's right - Xbox's beloved community-building, base-managing, zombie-chomping franchise is crossing the aisle and heading to PlayStation 5 as well. Microsoft continuing to multiplatform their exclusives is basically a speedrun at this point, and State of Decay 3 is the latest to complete that achievement.
Community is survival - and apparently, so is platform diversity
A new trailer dropped alongside the announcement, giving us a fresh look at what Undead Labs has been cooking up since the sequel was first teased what feels like several gaming generations ago. The game's tagline, "Community is Survival," is front and center, suggesting the series' signature co-op, base-building, and permadeath mechanics are all returning for another brutal run.
For the uninitiated, State of Decay has always been that underrated gem sitting quietly in the corner while louder zombie franchises hogged the spotlight. You manage a community of survivors, scavenge for resources, and try desperately not to get your favorite characters permanently deleted by a zombie horde. It's basically a spreadsheet simulator with extra biting.
The wait continues, but the squad just got bigger
With 2027 still on the horizon, this announcement is more of a "save the date" than a full send, but it's meaningful progress for a game that has been deep in development radio silence. The PS5 addition also significantly widens the potential player base, which, for a game so focused on community survival mechanics and co-op play, actually makes a ton of thematic sense.
Whether 2027 holds firm or gets pushed further into the undead abyss remains to be seen - but for now, both Xbox diehards and PlayStation loyalists can start prepping their survivor rosters. The apocalypse, apparently, does not discriminate by platform.
