The chameleon and bat duo are ditching the platforming grind and strapping into a go-kart, apparently. A playtest listing for Super Yooka-Laylee Kart has popped up on SteamDB, complete with art and a logo, blowing Playtonic Games' cover wide open before they even had a chance to hit the announcement button. Nintendo Life first spotted this, citing Gematsu as the source.
Playtonic had been doing their best mysterious-indie-dev routine on social media for a couple of days, dropping teases that included the absolutely devastating couplet: "Collecting quills is far too slow, There may be faster ways to go..." Look, we respect the hustle, but when SteamDB is out here doing your marketing for you, the ARG is kind of over before it started.

From collect-a-thon to burnout
The leap from 3D platformer to kart racer is not exactly a villain arc - it's practically a rite of passage for any mascot worth their salt. Crash had it. Diddy Kong had it. Even Sonic has approximately 47 of them at this point. Yooka and Laylee joining the racing game genre feels less like a bold new direction and more like completing the mascot bingo card.
The playtest listing suggests Playtonic is moving fast on this one - pun absolutely intended. No release date or platform breakdown has been confirmed yet beyond what SteamDB has surfaced, so PC seems like the starting grid for now. Whether this makes it to Nintendo Switch or other consoles remains to be seen.

Why this could actually slap
Here's the thing - the kart racing genre has been crying out for a proper challenger ever since Mario Kart 8 Deluxe basically became a permanent fixture of the known universe. A quirky, colorful racer from a studio packed with ex-Rare talent? That has some real potential energy stored in it. Playtonic knows how to build charm into a game, and that could be exactly the secret weapon a kart racer needs to stand out in 2026.
Keep an eye on Playtonic's socials for what will presumably now be a very speedy official announcement, since the SteamDB cat is thoroughly out of the bag. Full details via Nintendo Life.
