Summer Game Fest 2026 hasn't even properly started and we're already getting surprise drops - except this one wasn't exactly planned. A Yooka-Laylee kart racer, reportedly titled Super Yooka-Laylee Kart, has leaked ahead of its presumably scheduled reveal, according to Eurogamer.
Developer Playtonic Games, clearly not one to pretend the cat isn't already out of the bag, teased on social media that "there may be faster ways to go" - which is either a knowing nod to the leak or the most transparent piece of PR we've seen since someone forgot to make a trailer private. Either way, the community has caught the drift.

From 3D platformer to pole position
For the uninitiated, Yooka-Laylee is Playtonic's lovechild born from the ashes of Rare's golden era - a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie that launched back in 2017. The duo have since starred in the well-received 2D platformer Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, but apparently someone at Playtonic looked at Mario Kart's bank account and said "yeah, we want some of that."

A kart racer spinoff is honestly a power move for a franchise of this size. It's the classic "we made a good platformer, now let's put everyone in go-karts" speedrun that Nintendo basically invented and every developer secretly wants to attempt.

Summer Game Fest timing is sus
The leak dropping right before Summer Game Fest 2026 suggests Playtonic had a proper reveal locked and loaded for the showcase. Nothing quite hits like watching a carefully crafted announcement trailer after the internet has already datamined your entire press kit - a rite of passage in modern game development at this point.
Details beyond the title and Playtonic's cheeky tease remain scarce, so we don't yet know platforms, release windows, or whether this will feature the kind of chaotic item gameplay that ends friendships. But given Playtonic's track record of leaning hard into nostalgia and charm, there's reason to be cautiously optimistic that this won't just be a cash-grab blue shell to the face.
Stay tuned to Summer Game Fest 2026 - because apparently the real Summer Game Fest leaks were the friends we made along the way.
