If Tekken were a fighting game roster, it's starting to look like Bandai Namco is getting hit with a serious character select screen deletion combo. According to TheGamer, veteran developer Kohei Ikeda - better known in the community as Nakatsu - has officially left the company.
For the uninitiated, Nakatsu stepped up as the guy holding the controller after the legendary Katsuhiro Harada made his own exit from the Tekken franchise. Essentially, he was the one tasked with keeping the iron fist of the series from going completely off the rails after its most iconic figure walked out the door.
Now he's walking out too. That's two legendary names checking out of Tekken HQ in what feels like a very short window of time, and fans are understandably hitting the panic button harder than a mashey player spamming low kicks online.
Who even IS Nakatsu?
Kohei Ikeda isn't some random background NPC in this story. The guy is a certified Tekken veteran who carried serious institutional knowledge about the franchise - the kind of developer who knows where all the bodies are buried, both figuratively and in terms of legacy code.
His departure following Harada's feels less like a coincidence and more like the start of a pattern. When a franchise starts hemorrhaging its foundational dev talent, it's the kind of lore drop that makes long-time fans nervous about what the next chapter looks like.
So what does this mean for Tekken?
Tekken 8 is out and alive, so it's not like the servers are going dark tomorrow. But the question hanging over the community now is about the long game - who's steering the ship for whatever comes next, be it DLC, balance patches, or a potential Tekken 9?
Bandai Namco hasn't exactly been spamming press releases about the franchise's future direction, and losing yet another pillar of the development team doesn't exactly feel like a buffs patch for fan confidence.
The Tekken faithful have survived a lot - motion-capture bears, Negan guest characters, and about seventeen different versions of the same story mode - but watching the old guard fade away one by one hits different. Here's hoping the new blood at Bandai Namco has done their homework, because the community absolutely will notice if they haven't.
