Microsoft has announced a dedicated digital showcase for the next entry in the Metro franchise. Xbox First Look: Metro 2039 is set to premiere on April 16, 2026, at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET via YouTube, according to Noisy Pixel.
The broadcast will feature the world premiere of Metro 2039, the fourth mainline title developed by 4A Games. The Metro series has built a loyal following since the original Metro 2033 launched back in 2010, blending tense survival horror with deeply atmospheric post-apocalyptic storytelling set beneath the ruins of Moscow.
What we know so far
Details on Metro 2039 remain tightly under wraps ahead of the showcase. The numbered title suggests a continuation of the timeline established in Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light, though 4A Games has shown a willingness to expand the setting - Metro Exodus took the action well beyond the tunnels and into the Russian wilderness.
Microsoft giving the game its own dedicated First Look slot is a notable move. These focused showcases signal a meaningful level of publisher investment and marketing commitment, putting Metro 2039 in elevated company alongside other first-look treatments Xbox has rolled out for high-profile titles.
Why this matters
The Metro series occupies a unique space in the shooter genre - it's never chased the mainstream in the way that bigger FPS franchises have, instead leaning hard into immersive sim elements, resource scarcity, and narrative weight. That approach has earned it a dedicated fanbase that's been waiting for 4A Games' next move since Exodus landed in 2019.
A full seven years between mainline entries is a long runway, and expectations will be high. Whether 4A Games has stuck with the series' signature claustrophobic tension or pushed further into the open-world direction Exodus explored will be one of the first questions the April 16 showcase needs to answer.
Mark your calendar for April 16 - the YouTube stream kicks off at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET.
