Firaxis is marking its 30th anniversary with more than just a brand refresh - the studio has announced an XCOM tabletop game, according to GameSpot. Details are still thin on the ground, but the adaptation will be miniatures-focused, meaning you can soon lose your favorite soldier to a Sectoid ambush right there on your kitchen table.
Modiphius Entertainment is leading development on the project. The studio has a solid track record with video game adaptations, having previously handled the Mass Effect board game and Fallout: The Roleplaying Game, so the IP is in experienced hands.
Beyond the miniatures focus, Firaxis hasn't revealed specifics about gameplay mechanics, player count, or a release window. The announcement came alongside the studio's broader 30th-anniversary celebrations, which also included a visual rebrand for Firaxis itself.
The XCOM franchise has always had strong tabletop DNA - the series is rooted in turn-based tactics, permadeath, and squad management, all concepts that translate naturally to board game design. A well-executed adaptation could scratch that XCOM itch for fans who've been waiting for a new entry in the video game series, while also opening the universe up to a whole new audience of hobby gamers.
Modiphius has built a reputation for detailed, lore-faithful miniatures games, so expectations will be high when more details eventually drop. We'll keep an eye on further announcements as Firaxis continues its anniversary rollout.
