EA is kicking off a free trial for Battlefield 6 shortly after the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, and according to VG247, the timing is very much intentional. Whether you follow the shooter rivalry drama or not, the message is hard to miss.
The free trial gives undecided players a no-cost window to jump into Battlefield 6 at exactly the moment the gaming conversation is dominated by the latest CoD launch. It's a bold move that puts both titles in direct competition for the same playerbase at the same time.

Why the timing matters
EA has been aggressively positioning Battlefield 6 as the premium alternative to Call of Duty throughout this entire cycle. Dropping a free trial in the immediate aftermath of a Black Ops 7 launch is a calculated way to capture players who may have picked up the new CoD and found themselves underwhelmed - or who simply want to see what the competition is offering.

The free trial format also lowers the barrier significantly. Players who might be sitting on the fence don't need to commit any cash to find out if Battlefield 6 scratches the large-scale multiplayer itch that CoD historically doesn't chase in the same way.

The bigger picture for the shooter market
The FPS multiplayer space has rarely been this competitive. With Battlefield 6 making a genuine push for relevance after the series spent years rebuilding trust following Battlefield 2042, EA clearly feels confident enough in the product to put it in front of skeptical players for free.
It's a smart play. The worst case scenario is that players try it, bounce off it, and go back to Black Ops 7. The best case is that Battlefield 6 converts a meaningful chunk of those players into paying customers, and EA chips away at CoD's dominance at one of its most visible moments of the year.
For players, this is simply a free opportunity to spend some time with one of the year's biggest shooters without spending a penny. That's hard to argue with regardless of where you fall on the Battlefield versus CoD debate.
