Final Fantasy XIV's days on PlayStation 4 are numbered, with Square Enix signaling that support for the aging platform will likely wrap up around patch 8.2, according to reporting from TheGamer. That's still a fair ways off, but the developer is clearly trying to get the word out early so no one gets blindsided.
This isn't a huge shock given where the hardware generation stands. The PS4 launched over a decade ago, and keeping a live service MMO optimized across both last-gen and current-gen platforms creates real overhead for developers - overhead that could otherwise go toward expanding and improving the game itself.

What this means for PS4 players
If you're still running FFXIV on a base PS4 or PS4 Pro, the clock is ticking, but it's not a sprint to the finish line. Patch 8.2 is multiple major content updates away, meaning players have meaningful time to either upgrade to PS5 or migrate to PC before the cutoff hits.

FFXIV has a strong cross-save ecosystem, so transitioning platforms shouldn't be a painful process. Your Warrior of Light, your housing nightmares, your thousands of hours - all of it carries over. The harder part for some players will simply be the hardware cost of jumping to a newer platform.

The broader pattern across live service games
This follows a trend we've seen across the industry as studios gradually sunset last-gen support. Maintaining last-gen versions of games with active online components is resource-intensive, and as the PS4's player base shrinks, the math on continued support gets harder to justify. FFXIV director and producer Naoki Yoshida has consistently been transparent with the community about the game's direction, and flagging this well in advance fits that approach.
For a game that nearly collapsed before its A Realm Reborn relaunch turned it into one of the most beloved MMOs ever made, FFXIV's community tends to take these transitions in stride. The game continues to evolve rapidly, and keeping the technical foundation modern is part of what allows that.
No hard end date has been locked in yet, but players on PS4 should treat patch 8.2 as their working deadline and plan accordingly.
