Final Fantasy 14 has pulled off some wild crossovers over the years, but the latest announcement has the MMO community genuinely baffled. Square Enix has confirmed a collaboration with Neon Genesis Evangelion, the seminal 1990s mecha anime known for its psychological depth, apocalyptic imagery, and general refusal to be a normal piece of media.
As PC Gamer points out, the logistical challenge here is legitimately puzzling. NGE is a franchise soaked in Christian symbolism, existential dread, and a finale that takes place largely inside the human psyche. FF14, meanwhile, is a game where your catgirl healer asks you to gather five wolf pelts. The tonal gap between these two properties is roughly the size of an Angel's AT field.

What we actually know
Details are still thin on the ground. What's clear is that the crossover is happening, and that it will presumably follow the template of previous FF14 collabs - think special quests, cosmetic rewards, and themed gear that lets players dress their Warrior of Light in franchise-appropriate fits. Previous crossovers with properties like Yo-kai Watch and Final Fantasy itself have leaned heavily into cosmetics and mounts.

The real question is how the game's writers will contextualise Eva's lore within Eorzea. Will the Evas appear as primals? Will Shinji's infamous refusal to pilot Unit-01 become a fetch quest? The creative gymnastics required to make this work within FF14's narrative framework are either going to be brilliantly absurd or deeply, deeply strange.

A crossover that makes a weird kind of sense
To be fair, FF14 and NGE share more DNA than the surface-level chaos suggests. Both deal heavily in themes of isolation, the burden of being a chosen hero, and the psychological cost of saving the world repeatedly. FF14's Warrior of Light has absorbed enough world-ending trauma to give Shinji Ikari a run for his money in the therapy waiting room.
The FF14 fanbase is predictably losing its mind over the announcement, with reactions ranging from genuine excitement to the kind of concerned confusion that feels appropriate when two extremely weird franchises collide. Whether the execution lands or produces something utterly chaotic, it's going to be unmissable content for fans of either property.
No firm release date for the collaboration has been announced yet. Given FF14's current patch cadence, expect more details to surface in the coming weeks as Square Enix reveals exactly what shape this fever dream is going to take.
