Microsoft has announced a surprise showcase dropping later this week, and it's entirely dedicated to one game: Metro 2039 from 4A Games. The event is dubbed 'Xbox First Look' and will serve as the world premiere reveal of the new Metro title.
The showcase goes live on Thursday, April 16th at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST. According to Pure Xbox, Microsoft is framing this in a similar vein to their upcoming Stranger Than Heaven event - focused, single-game presentations rather than sprawling multi-title directs.
What to expect
Details beyond the reveal itself are scarce right now, but a dedicated showcase for a single title suggests 4A Games has something substantial to show. The Metro series has always been a technically impressive franchise, and a full first-look format gives the studio room to walk through gameplay, world-building, and story beats without competing for airtime.

The timing is interesting too. Microsoft has been leaning into this more curated showcase format lately, letting individual games breathe instead of cramming dozens of announcements into a single broadcast. For a franchise as atmospheric as Metro, that approach makes a lot of sense.
Metro returns
The Metro series, based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's post-apocalyptic novels, has built a devoted fanbase through its immersive first-person survival gameplay set in the ruins of Moscow's underground. Metro Exodus in 2019 was a major step forward for the series, opening up the world considerably while keeping the oppressive tension the series is known for.
Metro 2039 will be the next chapter, and Thursday's showcase should give fans their first proper look at where 4A Games is taking the franchise next. If you want to catch it live, mark 10am PT on April 16th in your calendar.
