Capcom really said 'April Fools... but actually no' and launched the original Resident Evil trilogy on Steam. According to Game Informer, Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis are now fully available on PC via Steam, timed to celebrate the franchise's 30th anniversary this year.
As if that wasn't enough of a nostalgia nuke, Capcom also dropped Breath of Fire IV into the mix - because why not speedrun the goodwill meter straight to max? Each title comes with quality-of-life updates to support modern operating systems and current controllers, so you won't need to dust off your compatibility mode wizardry to get these running.
The timing of the announcement - April 1st - had players doing a double take harder than a first-person shooter headshot. But nope, this is the real deal. No fake patch notes, no hidden troll ending. Just four classic Capcom titles revived for a new generation of players who maybe only know Leon S. Kennedy from his glow-up in the RE4 remake.
This is shaping up to be one of the more wholesome anniversary moves in recent gaming memory. Getting the OG survival horror trilogy onto a modern storefront - complete with controller support - is exactly the kind of low-effort, high-reward W that fans have been grinding for. The Resident Evil series essentially invented the 'I don't have enough ink ribbons for this' genre of stress-induced panic, and now a whole new audience gets to suffer through it at 1440p.
Breath of Fire IV tagging along is the cherry on top. The classic JRPG has been relatively hard to access for years, making this a genuine treat for fans of Capcom's older catalog beyond just the zombie-punching extended universe.
All four titles are available now on Steam. Save your progress. You're going to need it.
