Sony is out here playing offense this May, because the PlayStation Plus catalog additions are actually worth writing home about. According to Game Informer, the headliners are Star Wars Outlaws, Red Dead Redemption 2, and arcade classic Time Crisis - a triple threat that covers space cowboys, regular cowboys, and the kind of cowboy who hides behind cardboard boxes at the arcade.

Star Wars Outlaws launched in 2024 and follows scoundrel Kay Vess doing scoundrel things across the galaxy, while Red Dead Redemption 2 remains one of the most beautiful and emotionally devastating open-world games ever made. Rockstar's cowboy epic dropping into a subscription service is basically Sony handing you a 60-hour grief session completely free of charge - lucky you.

Now here is the catch, because there is always a catch. If you are rocking a PlayStation Plus Extra subscription, you get access to both the Star Wars and Red Dead titles, but Time Crisis is locked behind PlayStation Plus Premium. That is right, Sony is gatekeeping the light gun classic behind the top tier, which is either diabolical corporate behavior or a very effective upsell strategy - possibly both.

What tier do you need?

To summarize the PlayStation Plus tiering situation so you do not have to do the math yourself:

  • PlayStation Plus Extra - gets you Star Wars Outlaws and Red Dead Redemption 2
  • PlayStation Plus Premium - gets you all of the above plus Time Crisis

If you have been sitting on a PlayStation Plus Extra sub and waiting for a good reason to actually use it, two massive open-world titles dropping in the same month is a pretty compelling argument. And if you have been on the fence about upgrading to Premium, Sony clearly thinks Time Crisis is the tipping point - which honestly, in a world starved of good arcade shooter content, might not even be the wrong call.

All titles are set to hit the PlayStation Plus catalog this month, so queue them up before your backlog gets any ideas about staging a revolt.
