The Sacred franchise is making a comeback, though not quite in the form longtime fans might have expected. Developer SparklingBit has announced Sacred: Last Pixel of Ancaria, a new entry in the classic action RPG series that trades the originals' 3D world for a pixelated art style, according to Niche Gamer.
THQ Nordic, which holds the Sacred IP, has greenlit SparklingBit's use of the license - a notable move given how quietly the franchise has sat dormant for years. The last mainline entry, Sacred 3, landed back in 2014 to a pretty rough reception, so there's genuine appetite for a course correction here.
Back to Ancaria
Sacred: Last Pixel of Ancaria is still early enough in development that target platforms haven't been confirmed yet. To get the project across the finish line, SparklingBit is planning a Kickstarter campaign, putting some of the funding responsibility in the hands of the community that still cares about this series.
The pixel art direction is an interesting call. Rather than trying to recapture the isometric 3D look of the beloved Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, SparklingBit is carving out its own visual identity. Done right, that approach can breathe fresh life into a dormant IP without feeling like a cheap imitation of what came before.
What to expect
Specific gameplay details are still thin on the ground at this stage. What we know is that the game is set in Ancaria, the richly built fantasy world that gave the original Sacred games much of their charm - an open world packed with quests, loot, and enough content to lose weeks in.
Whether SparklingBit can capture that same sense of scale and depth in a pixel format remains the big question. Crowdfunding campaigns for retro-style RPGs have a mixed track record, so the Kickstarter will be a real indicator of how much goodwill the Sacred name still carries with players.
No release window or platform announcements have been made yet. Keep an eye on the Kickstarter launch for the first real look at how this revival is shaping up.
