Put down the crafting table and step away from the hype train - Rust 2 is not happening. At least not right now. Facepunch founder Garry Newman has personally confirmed that no sequel to the beloved naked-man survival sandbox is currently in development, according to Rock Paper Shotgun.
The whole saga kicked off when a Rust 2 Steam listing mysteriously appeared, sending the survival game community into a full-on chat spiral. Players were already sharpening their rocks and planning their server dominations before the boss himself had to come in and hit the emergency stop button.

A Steam page that started a war (of speculation)
Look, we get it. A Rust 2 Steam listing is basically a giant glowing loot crate dropped from the sky - you're going to run toward it regardless of whether it might explode in your face. The internet did exactly what the internet does, and speculation spread faster than a server wipe announcement on a Friday night.

Newman's denial is about as clear as it gets though. No sequel. Not in development. The Steam page was apparently enough of a false alarm to warrant the Facepunch founder addressing the community directly, which at least means we know where things officially stand.

So what now, survivor?
The original Rust is still very much alive and kicking - and by kicking, we mean some naked guy with a rock is absolutely kicking your freshly spawned character into the ocean. Facepunch continues to update the game regularly, so it's not like the studio is sitting on its hands waiting for a sequel pitch to land.
Still, the fact that a rogue Steam page caused this much chaos tells you everything about the appetite for a follow-up. The people want Rust 2. They want to be naked, confused, and immediately murdered in glorious high-definition sequel form. Maybe someday, Garry. Maybe someday.
Until then, touch grass - or at least, touch the procedurally generated grass of a Rust server before someone burns your base down.
