Starfield has climbed to the top of the US gaming charts, claiming the best-selling position across both digital and physical purchases - its first time hitting that milestone since 2023. The achievement comes on the back of the game's recent PlayStation 5 launch, which has given the Bethesda RPG a fresh wave of sales momentum.
According to Mat Piscatella of analysis firm Circana, Starfield secured the top spot for the most recent tracked week in the US market. It's a notable chart position for a title that originally launched as an Xbox and PC exclusive back in 2023, and one that Microsoft will likely point to as validation of its multiplatform strategy.
The PS5 launch numbers themselves were described as a mixed bag. Per Alinea Analytics data reported by Pure Xbox, Starfield moved around 140,000 copies on PS5 during its debut week - labeled "a middling start" by the analytics firm. That said, the figure reportedly outperformed other recent Xbox first-party titles that have made the jump to PlayStation, including Ninja Gaiden 4 and The Outer Worlds 2.

Context matters here
It's worth noting the chart-topping position likely benefited from a quieter release week rather than a sudden surge in mainstream demand. Starfield topping the charts with 140,000 PS5 copies sold in week one is a far cry from the blockbuster launch numbers that typically dominate yearly sales rankings.
Still, a number one is a number one. For Xbox, which has been navigating a complicated path of releasing first-party games on rival hardware, Starfield sitting at the top of the US charts - even briefly - is a PR win worth taking. Whether the game's PS5 legs can sustain meaningful sales in the weeks ahead will be the more telling story for Microsoft's cross-platform ambitions.
Starfield has had a turbulent post-launch reputation, with its one major expansion Shattered Space receiving a lukewarm reception. Its arrival on PS5 represents one of the bigger tests yet of whether Xbox games can find a genuine second life on Sony's platform.
