After 22 years of holding down the fort at one of gaming's most recognizable shooter studios, Treyarch studio head Mark Gordon is hanging up his controller for good. According to Game Developer, Gordon is stepping down from his role, closing out a tenure that spans nearly the entire history of the Call of Duty franchise itself.

That's not a typo - 22 years. The man was running Treyarch when half the current gaming audience was still in diapers arguing over which Power Ranger was the best. To put it in perspective, he was there before zombies mode was even a thing. Absolute legend status, no debate.

Rather than promoting a single successor to take the throne, Activision and Treyarch are going the co-op route. Two new co-studio heads will split the responsibilities previously held by Gordon, essentially doing a two-player run on what was previously a solo campaign. It's a pretty common industry move these days, though it does raise the eternal gamer question: will they share the loot equally, or is there going to be some serious inventory drama?

Treyarch, for those somehow unaware, is the studio behind the beloved Black Ops sub-series of Call of Duty, and most recently co-developed Black Ops 6 alongside Raven Software. The studio has been one of Activision's crown jewels for decades, and Gordon's steady hand on the wheel has been a huge part of that legacy.

The timing is interesting, coming off the back of Black Ops 6's launch and with the Call of Duty machine already grinding toward whatever comes next. Leadership transitions at major studios always carry some risk - it's essentially a mid-game save transfer with the fate of a multi-billion dollar franchise on the line. No pressure, new co-bosses.

Gordon's exit is the kind of industry moment that deserves more than a quick scroll-past. Twenty-two years at a single studio is almost unheard of in an era where developers job-hop faster than a speedrunner skips cutscenes. Whatever he does next, the man has clearly earned a very long AFK.

The identity of the two incoming co-studio heads has not yet been publicly confirmed at the time of writing. We'll be keeping our eyes on this one as it develops.
