Level-5 is taking another shot at recapturing the magic of Yokai Watch with Holy Horror Mansion, a spiritual successor to its monster-collecting RPG franchise. The game has been revealed with early footage, and according to Push Square, it looks genuinely impressive - though the studio is flagging that it's still "a ways away" from release.
Yokai Watch was a legitimate cultural phenomenon for a hot minute, rivaling Pokemon in Japan and building serious momentum in the West before Level-5's track record of letting franchises fizzle out caught up with it. Holy Horror Mansion appears to be the developer leaning back into that gothic monster-collecting lane with a fresh identity rather than trying to resurrect the original IP directly.
What we know so far
Details remain relatively scarce at this stage, but the spiritual successor framing suggests Level-5 wants to build something new rather than be constrained by Yokai Watch's existing lore and baggage. The "horror mansion" aesthetic hints at a spookier, potentially darker tone than its predecessor - which could help differentiate it in a genre that Pokemon continues to dominate.
The timing is worth noting. Level-5 has had a rough stretch internationally, with multiple high-profile projects either delayed, cancelled, or simply never making it outside Japan. Holy Horror Mansion being positioned as a spiritual successor rather than a numbered sequel gives the studio more flexibility creatively and commercially.
The PS5 question
Push Square flags that the game will "probably spook PS5," nodding to the very real possibility that by the time Holy Horror Mansion is ready to ship, the PlayStation 6 era could already be underway. Level-5's development timelines have historically been... optimistic, so "a ways away" from a studio with their track record should be taken seriously.
Still, the early look is promising enough to get fans of the original series paying attention. If Level-5 can deliver on what's being shown and actually get the game into Western players' hands, Holy Horror Mansion has a real shot at filling the Yokai Watch-shaped hole that's existed in the monster-collecting genre for years. Whether it'll actually cross that finish line is the big question.
