Rumors suggesting that Playground Games might delay Fable in response to GTA 6's release have been officially squashed. The studio responded to the speculation by reaffirming its autumn 2026 release window, telling fans it is "excited to welcome you back to Albion in autumn 2026," according to PC Gamer.
The rumor mill had been spinning on the idea that major releases like GTA 6 could cause publishers to shift their launch windows to avoid direct competition - a strategy that's become increasingly common in the industry. Fable was apparently caught up in that speculation, with some suggesting Microsoft and Playground might blink first.

That doesn't appear to be the case. The studio's statement is about as clear a denial as you're going to get without an exact release date stamped on a calendar. Autumn 2026 remains the target, and Playground seems committed to it.

A long road back to Albion
Fable has been in development for years at this point, first revealed back at Xbox Games Showcase 2020. The reboot of the beloved RPG series - which takes the franchise back to its whimsical, irreverent British roots - has been one of the more anticipated Xbox exclusives on the horizon. Playground Games, best known for the Forza Horizon series, has been relatively quiet about specific details throughout development.

The GTA 6 delay conversation has become something of an industry-wide talking point. Rockstar's blockbuster is one of the most anticipated games ever made, and its release window creates a genuine gravitational pull that makes some publishers nervous about proximity. We've already seen some developers openly acknowledge scheduling around it.
Playground and Microsoft appear unbothered, at least publicly. Whether autumn 2026 puts Fable in direct competition with other major releases remains to be seen, but for now, the studio is holding its ground and keeping the hype train on schedule. Xbox fans who've been waiting to revisit Albion can at least rest easier knowing the target hasn't shifted - yet.
